Kids and Parents Learn About Childhood Asthma
10/13/2007
Affecting an estimated 6.2 children and listed as the most common chronic disorder in childhood, asthma is often misunderstood and warning signs are not noticed by kids and their parents until an attack occurs. Riley Hospital for at Clarian North is leading a grassroots effort to educate the community about asthma in children, beginning Saturday, October 13. That morning, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., representatives from Riley Hospital North, including Dr. Michael Tsangaris, will be on hand at Carmel's Shelborne Soccer Fields (3451 W. 126th Street) to distribute information and teach both parents and children at Carmel Dad's Club games about the warning signs and dangers associated with childhood asthma.
"Parents often describe their child's problem as a cold that has settled in the chest," said Dr. Tsangaris. "When properly diagnosed, asthma has a variety of treatments that most children respond to very favorably and can continue life and sports with few interruptions. The important factor is the diagnosis and education of the child, parents and other responsible adults," Tsangaris continued.
