New Clinic to Treat Childhood Obesity Opens
10/21/2008
INDIANAPOLIS - Riley Hospital for Children today announced the opening of the Pediatric OverWeight Education and Research (POWER) program, a multi-faceted approach to empower local health care providers and families to control pediatric obesity.
The POWER program will establish a tertiary-care, multi-disciplinary weight management program at Riley Hospital for Children. Riley families will receive individualized access to specialists, medical evaluations and life-style modification.
POWER will also serve as a resource for health care providers and the community in efforts to promote collaboration, research and resources to control pediatric obesity. The clinic is now open and accepting referrals.
Headed by Riley gastroenterologist Sandeep Gupta, MD, the POWER program will educate local hospitals to train existing staff such as registered dietitians, social workers, exercise physiologists and other clinicians, to educate families and become champions for weight management in their communities. Indiana University School of Medicine residents and medical students also will benefit from POWER, which will facilitate the creation of interactive teaching modules about obesity and nutrition.
