IUSM/Riley Director of Adolescent Medicine Receives National Award

03/06/2009

Dr. Donald Orr, Professor of Pediatrics and the Founding Director of the Section of Adolescent Medicine at IU School of Medicine and Riley Hospital, will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award in Adolescent Medicine from the Society for Adolescent Medicine (SAM) March 27th at the SAM annual meeting in Los Angeles. SAM is a multi-disciplinary organization of health professionals who are committed to advancing the health and well-being of adolescents. Through education, research, clinical services, and advocacy activities, members of SAM strive to enhance public and professional awareness of adolescent health issues among families, educators, policy makers, youth serving organizations, students who are considering a health career as well other health professionals. The Outstanding Achievement Award in Adolescent Medicine was established in 1981 to recognize individuals nationally and internationally for their commitment to improving the health and care resources for adolescents and young adults.

Dr. Orr started the Section of Adolescent Medicine when he joined Indiana University and Riley Hospital in 1983. Now, 26 years later, the Section of Adolescent Medicine provides over 40,000 adolescent clinic visits per year, is one of the preeminent academic training programs in the country and brings in over $3,000,000 per year in the extramural (mostly federal) research support. Section faculty and trainees have published over 270 scientific articles and book chapters. Faculty have served in virtually all leadership positions in national organizations involved in clinical care, education or research related to adolescent medicine.

Congratulations to Dr. Orr and thanks to him for developing the #1 Adolescent Medicine Section in the country.
