IUDM surpasses $10 million in donations for Riley Hospital

Indianapolis - Twenty years ago Indiana University Dance Marathon (IUDM) was born thanks to Bloomington students taking initiative in honor of AIDS activist and Riley Hospital for Children patient, Ryan White. This year's event concluded at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning with an emotional, record celebration thanks to $1,602,713.20 in donations for the Ryan White Infectious Disease Center at Riley Hospital. Since its inception, the event has now surpassed $10 million for Riley Hospital.

The event was celebrated by more than 100 IUDM alumni, notable speakers and a bone marrow registry drive. Eric Davis, the current student president of IUDM, credits his life to the bone marrow transplant he received at Riley Hospital.

BONE MARROW REGISTRY DRIVE

In honor of Davis' Riley story, the marathon included a Be The Match Bone Marrow Registry Drive for students on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The goal was to register 300 IUDM participants.

Because 70 percent of people who need a transplant do not match a family member and 40 percent of those who do turn to the registry do not find a match there either, growing the registry is critical. Patients die waiting because a person who is their match has not registered. Joining the Be The Match Registry is as easy as completing a health history form and swabbing the inside of the cheek. Once on the registry, potential donors are available for patients searching worldwide.
