Director of Riley Safety Store Is a Finalist in Non-Physician Category

Dr. James Lemons, director of neonatal/perinatal medicine at Riley Hospital for Children, has been named the winner in the Physician category of the Indianapolis Business Journal Health Care Hero Awards for 2008. Dr. Lemons was recognized for building one of the best neonatology programs in the country, for his untiring advocacy for families and for his ceaseless commitment to patients.

"Dr. Lemons's commitment to excellence is the reason Child magazine recognized Riley Hospital's NICU among the nation's top 10 for several years. It's why he has been included in every single edition of America's Top Doctors, the prestigious publication for consumers in which tens of thousands of physicians and hospital leaders select the nation's top doctors. It's why his research programs have been supported by continuous NIH funding and other grants for 25 years," wrote Clarian President and CEO Daniel F. Evans Jr. in a letter supporting the nomination.

Karen Bruner Stroup, PhD, director of community education and child advocacy at Riley, was one of the three finalists in the Non-Physician category for her work in creating the Riley Safety Store.

The IBJ Health Care Heroes Awards program recognizes individuals and/or organizations in the central Indiana health care industry who are making a significant impact on the quality of health care in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The IBJ and a panel of health care professionals reviewed nominations in five categories - corporate achievement, advancements in health care, physician, nonphysician and volunteer - and announced the winners at the Health Care Heroes awards breakfast on March 7.
