Riley at Clarian North Takes the Lead on Asthma Care for Children
07/09/2008
Carmel, IN - When a child is brought to the Emergency Department at Clarian North Medical Center suffering from complications related to asthma, a unique program focusing on care and education is now available. REACT?Riley Emergency Asthma Care and Teaching?provides access to asthma specialists every Monday through Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The asthma specialists can help minimize Emergency Department visits through a combination of education and preventive medicine. While the child is receiving medical care under the direction of the Clarian North Emergency Department staff, the asthma specialist will have an educational discussion with the family regarding the child's asthma, treatment options and preventing future exacerbations.
After these hours and on weekends, a short video will be available for the family to watch in the Emergency Department exam room. (View the video by clicking here). While asthma can be a very dangerous disease, with proper education and treatment, children can live healthy, productive lives.
"Families really appreciate the additional time with a physician. When your child is having difficulty breathing, it is often an emotional, upsetting time. Coupled with the care the child receives, the educational conversation is a great way to calm both the parents and the child", said Dr. Michael Tsangaris, one of Riley's Pediatric Pulmonologists.
Dr. Howard Eigen agrees, "This is a win-win for everyone involved, the child, parents and the medical professionals. Our goal is to relieve the fear that comes with a child's asthma attack and give the family the tools to better manage the disease as well.
