Over the past two years, the Riley Heart Center has received a great deal of media attention surrounding several international children with heart conditions who have come to Riley Hospital for Children for treatment. These children received came to Riley as part of the Riley Hospital and the Rotary International "Gift of Life" program. The "Gift of Life" program contributes resources to bring several children from less developed nations around the world to Riley to receive life saving care they otherwise would not.
While the international cases often receive the most publicity, the pediatric heart surgeons of Riley routinely perform many of these same surgeries on kids from right here at home. Annually, they perform around 550 surgeries each year, mainly dedicated to saving and enhancing the lives of Indiana's children. In addition, the Riley Heart Center has a dynamic multi-disciplinary team to help children with many different heart conditions and complexities that don't always require surgery.
For more than 50 years, the Riley Heart Center has been a leader in advancing diagnostic, surgical and outpatient care to those with congenital heart disease. It is the only tertiary care pediatric hospital in Indiana and draws upon pediatric specialists from all medical disciplines to provide the most comprehensive patient care available. Riley physicians serve patients from Indiana, the U.S. and around the world.
While Riley has touched the lives of children across the world, there are thousands of Hoosier children who have benefited from the quality, efficiency and expertise of the Riley Heart Center.
The Riley Heart Center team is focused on caring for fetal, pediatric and young adult patients with congenital heart disease. Riley's multidisciplinary care team consists of Indiana University School of Medicine faculty and pediatric specialists along with specialty nursing and allied health professionals. With facility and support systems only available at a major cardiovascular center, The Riley Heart Center provides state-of-the-art patient care including advanced diagnostic, interventional and corrective surgical procedures. Riley physicians are heavily involved in research and education and are pioneers of novel therapies including strategies for heart recovery as an alternative for transplantation.
