Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine
With one of the largest physician teams in the country, Riley's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides the most specialized care in the state for newborns and infants with medical or surgical problems. The 40-bed NICU at Clarian North is staffed by a team of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and social workers which provides the most advanced care available. Riley's Neonatologists and Perinatologists work together with more than 200 other specialists, such as pediatric cardiologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric neurologists, pediatric urologists and many others who are experts in the care of infants and children. Clarian North has board-certified, Indiana University School of Medicine faculty physicians in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including neonatologists, critical care intensivists, pediatric surgeons and emergency room physicians.
In addition to the NICU at Riley and Clarian North, the Riley neonatologists manage the NICU at Indiana University Hospital. Almost 20,000 babies are born each year at these hospitals (a fourth of the births in Indiana); more than 4,000 babies are treated within the Neonatal ICUs each year (with nearly a fourth of those at Riley alone), with survival rates ranking among the highest in the nation.
- Advanced Respiratory Technology: Riley offers the most advanced technologies for premature and critically ill newborns with respiratory problems, many of which were pioneered by Riley physicians. Riley was the leading hospital in the United States to evaluate the use of surfactant therapy, now used routinely to treat breathing problems in premature infants. Doctors at Riley also helped test and win federal approval for high-frequency jet ventilation, which helps babies breathe without stressing the lungs. Riley was the first NICU to provide high-frequency oscillatory ventilation in Indiana. In addition, Riley has one of the largest and most experienced ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) programs in the country.
- Prenatal Expert Care: Care for newborns often begins even before the birth and continues long after the baby leaves the hospital. When potential problems are detected during pregnancy, perinatologists and neonatologists work together with the mother's obstetrician to plan ahead for the baby's health. After the baby is born, Riley works with each baby's pediatrician or family doctor to arrange for any special care the baby may need at home.
- Emergency Transport: Critically ill infants and children throughout Indiana and neighboring states have prompt access to Riley via the Critical Care Transport Units. Helicopter transport is also available.
